2024: Advanced Course of Interface Design

ヒューマンコンピュータインタラクションに関する最新研究論文の輪講を主とする.なお各論文の技術や基礎知識についても必要に応じて授業の中でフォローしていく.履修者には各自担当論文を割り当て,20-30分程度の発表を行う.

This course will be focused on reading in turn the most recent research theses on human computer interaction. The technology and basic knowledge covered by each thesis will be followed up in class as necessary. A thesis for each student to oversee will be assigned to students taking this course, who will be asked to give presentations lasting around 20-30 min.

  • 論文はすべて英文.発表者は英語及び日本語での発表を選択することができます.なお英語による発表の場合,質疑応答も英語になります.
  • 単位履修者の中に日本語での受講が困難な学生が1名以上いる場合、該当者が発表の際は講義をすべて英語にて実施する場合があります。
  • All theses are in English. Presenting students have the option of presenting in English or Japanese. Note that when presenting in English, the Q&A that follows will also be in English.
  • If one or more students enrolled in a credit course have difficulty attending the course in Japanese, the lecture may be conducted entirely in English when the relevant student gives a presentation.

英語論文の読解力や先端研究におけるトレンドを学ぶ.ACM CHIから最新の論文を読み解くことで,インタラクションデザインの基礎的知識及び論文技術を身につけることが目的.

The aim is to acquire basic knowledge and paper skills in interaction design by reading and understanding the latest papers from the ACM CHI.

  • Please read TMU's grading policy on pass/fail
  • You are required to read at least two papers and give a presentation with slides at any class session.
  • In sessions where you are not the presenter, you are required to ask questions of the presenter in class.
  • Grading (pass/fail) will be based on a combination of factors:
    • 2 times Presentation(60%)
    • Engagement level in class, Questions/Comments to a presenter (40%)

This class will be conducted in a round-table format, which is called Rinko(輪講). Rinko is a seminar where participants take turns presenting. You may not have done this before, putting together slides of other people's papers. The following pages provide some tips on how to get the most out of Rinko.

心得は「著者の視座になること」一つだけですが、少し詳しく以下の様に述べます。

  1. 論文の内容や情報を変更してはいけません
    1. 論文は専門家による厳しい査読を経て掲載されています。理解しやすい様に、貴方がよくわからなかったから、そのような理由で論文情報を変更、省略することは決してやってはいけません。
  2. 必要に応じて、論文内で参照されている論文にも目を通します
    1. 貴方が担当になった論文を読むだけではいまいち論文内容が理解できない場合があります。必要に応じて参考文献にも目を通すことで著者の視座を獲得することが容易になります。
  3. 質疑応答では著者の気持ちで受け答えをします
    1. 発表後の質疑応答で一読者に戻ってはいけません。貴方は著者の代わりに発表しているので、貴方の考えではなく、「論文ではこの様に記述されている」、「以前の研究ではこういうことをやっていたので、今回はこの研究になったと推察されます」など、なるべく著者の視座で意見を述べてください。

There is only one principle: “Put yourself in the author's perspective”, but let me explain it in a bit more detail as follows:

  1. Do not alter the content or information of the paper
    1. The paper has gone through rigorous peer review by experts. Just because you didn't fully understand it, you must never alter or omit the paper's information to make it easier to understand.
  2. If necessary, review the papers referenced within the paper
    1. Simply reading the paper you are assigned to may not be enough to fully grasp its content. Looking at the references when necessary will help you better understand the author's perspective.
  3. In the Q&A session, respond from the author's point of view
    1. You must not revert to being just a reader during the Q&A session after your presentation. Since you are presenting on behalf of the author, answer with their perspective in mind, saying things like “The paper describes it this way” or “Based on previous research, this study was likely conducted for these reasons.” Make sure to express your opinions as much as possible from the author's point of view, not your own.

Since in-class communication will be made via TEAMS, students who will enroll in this class within one week of the guidance must attend TEAMS. 授業内での連絡はteamsを利用するため、ガイダンスから一週間以内に本授業を履修する学生は必ずteamsに参加してください。

  1. Browse through the video (https://sigchi.jp/seminar/chi2024/) of the CHI study group
  2. pick out papers that you are interested in, and be sure that your paper title is not included in the list (it needs TMU account to see the list).
  3. Please prepare your presentation on the date. You can choose a date as you like.
    1. Please be sure presentation slide is allowed to be written in Japanese or English.
    2. Speaking is also allowed to be in Japanese or English.

Tetsuaki Baba's Example

I recorded a video of me actually reading one paper and putting it into PowerPoint slides. It took me two hours and 40 minutes to compile one paper, but students should expect it to take twice as long as this and use it as a guide for their work.
